a busy year

on 2008 music kept me very busy,

I'm very grateful for this, playing with musicians I feel honored to play with

I played 67 shows with la national film chamber orchestra (most of them with matias mango) at malba, countless appearances at canal 7tv and 1 show at costanera sur with a luxurious lineup: samalea on drums; fito paez, mono fontana and matias mango on keyboards and myself on gtr

2 shows with maria eva albistur, one of them in montevideo,

22 shows and studio recordings with francisco bochaton,

2 shows with charly garcia in mar del plata and several very fine recording sessions at los pajaros, palito's studio near lujan, where charly is recovering

5 shows with flopa, with whom I wished there'd be many more!

4 performances with the guitar circle of europe around barcelona

12 shows with friends, including narrow bridges, mono fontana, ale franov, santiago vazquez, el diablo en la boca, lothus, mussa phelps, futura bold

over 100 live performances this year...

I was awarded with the condor de plata by the argentinean asociation of film critics for the music I recorded with fernando samalea and matias mango for a film by teresa costantini

recorded with fernando samalea, flopa, juan ravioli, julian massaldi. maria eva albistur, ale oliva, gabriel spiller, santiago vazquez, marcos rocca, maxi trusso, andra borlo, the circle of guitars of europe...mixed the live at nd ateneo cd...

all great projects that I feel happy and proud to be part of

the guitar academy on junin street is on its way and completed the year with a very warm live performance

so, music kept me very busy and there's no way I can complain!

a blessing

happy new year,

peace and love

weekend

on friday, saturday and sunday 8 performances by la national film chamber orchestra at malba.

15 minutes before the first show on friday the ac adapter for my gr20 guitar synth died. this meant I played the first 2 shows with no synth, only a clean guitar sound. and somehow it ended up being an advantage, particularly for the buster keaton movies...

my replacement adapter arrived in time for the last 2 shows. a lesson: always carry a spare transformer of each! to every show!

I had several technical problems in the last week: recording with charly, my tremolo pedal broke (a regular click sound!), also one of the buttons of the line 6 delay stopped responding...it's been a long year!!!!!

yesterday we played 2 movies, the last one "maman colibri", being the last performance of the year. a high note, to my ears a very good performance.

stools shopping at carrefour and back home for asado with the amianos, flopa and diego. wonderful!

rehearsal with charly today

busy weekend

charly's interview at newsweek is very good, from the heart. it was moving reading it.

on thursday, friday and saturday I played witha la national film chamber orchestra at malba, almost 8 hours sessions on thursday and friday, almost 4 hs on saturday

a comment by matias mango after one of the movies: "this movie plays by itself"...this is exactly how it feels for me when things are right with the silent films, and we had wonderful moments this week, particularly on friday and saturday. the last show was difficult. we were exhausted.

yesterday I also played with francisco bochaton at festival buen dia, an open air festival at the park next to the planetario. very good attendance, hot day, hot audience. pogo included. entre rios played before us, with their brand new lineup. no lo soporto played before but I missed them.

very tired

today I took a needed day off. listened to cat power and cornelius in the morning. such a treat. in my car peter gabriel and bob dylan. reading "el tano y yo", malvicino's book on his life with piazzola. wonderful!

http://www.lanacion.com.ar/nota.asp?nota_id=1081095

bochaton in plasma

last friday I played with francisco bochaton at plasma, a venue I usually enjoy playing at. but this time things became difficult. things went out of hands...the dressing room was shared with the opening band (good band!), so we had no private space before the show...the manager left the venue during our performance, without the band knowing he would, leaving things on the stage manager's hands. the stage manager had too many things on his hands. francisco broke a string and the sm couldn't replace it because he had no place to do this, and he didn't have the necessary tools (and strings!) to do it...so francisco played with an acoustic guitar completely out of tune... I had no place to stand since my space was the stage manager's path to francisco... an unbearable fan and his girlfriend stood next to me during the whole show disturbing me to the max. they attempted to steal my list of pieces (with important notes on it) and attempted to get me involved in a discussion during the show ... and my glass slide disapeared from the top of my amp. on top of this, they invaded the dressing room after the show, leaving me with no place to go. the venue's bar attendant was very kind and offered me something to drink. I had a diet coke. on top of my slide, matias' microkorg's transformer got lost. despite all this matias and quique said it was a good show. for me something got lost. an oportunity to play well and rock.

the federico garcia lorca's piece is stunning.

this week I visited maria eva albistur, we will play in uruguay next month. her songs are really good, and so will be her new record. good news: the hard case of my telecaster appeared in maria eva's house. it remained there since the days (...nights actually) of recordings with charly...I looked everywhere...now I found it...I'm very happy about this

feco visited last monday, great to have him at home. we will play together tonight

I won the condor de plata award

on saturday I played with francisco bochaton in rosario. I preferred the audience's heat in santa fe, although I always love to play in rosario. my jaguar gave me a hard time, having to adjust the bridges saddles' screws every few songs due to buzzing, this was possibly due to extreme temperature changes. the guitar is going to mr de castro for adjustment this week.

the venue: bar berlin

the band in the dressing room

the emergency exit by the dressing room... scary

some signs in rosario are not respected:

sunday: back to buenos aires on a bus

monday: recordings with maxi trusso and alejandro teran at concreto. this record will be stunning.

in the evening I went to the "condor de plata" ceremony at canal 7. lots of celebrities and stars, and film directors, actor, critics... I was nominated for "best music" for the music for teresa costantini's film "el amor y la ciudad", and to my surprise...I won the prize!

I didn't suspect they would give me the prize so I didn't even think of a speech...so I just said I share this prize with matias mango and fernando samalea, whith whom I worked together on this project. I was given a very nice little silver statue...

here's a photo of all the winners. lucia puenzo's XXY won the "best movie", best book and best female actress. my piece " theme for el rayo rubio" is featured in the film

tuesday: guitar lessons

wednesday: rehearsal with francisco and 2 movies at ciudad universitaria with matias

here's the schedule of filmoteca at canal 7 tv for this week:

FILMOTECA
Temas de Cine
Un programa de Fernando Martín Peña y Fabio Manes

SEMANA DE DRAMAS URBANOS
del 22 al 26 de Septiembre

Lunes a viernes 0:30 hs.

francisco bochaton, santa fe

rip hector zazou

the van picked me up at 6:00 am this morning, a good drive by mr vikingo, the highway in good shape. we listened to "abbey road" on the road

good spirits in the band

the bass player slept on the van

nice hotel downtown santa fe: the old and traditional hotel castelar. memories of my contemporary music studies in this town with professor mariano etkin, my friend natalia, my visits to rincon, the shows with los gauchos alemanes ("hot fat fish" era...actually this is the city where this name came out, also the recording of roger eno's "the frost" is from here...)

listened to maxi trusso's songs in the afternoon, in order to get familiar and ready for our upcoming recording session next monday. this recordings feature the banda de turistas and are being produced masterfully by alejandro teran

difficult soundcheck. the specialty of the local soundman is not exactly the kind of music we play. there was no understanding of our needs, nor much will to be on our side...difficult ... hard ... I could feel he hated when I stepped on my rat or fuzz factory...but hey...this is what we do...I wished we had our own soundman...probably so did he...

the venue

we played with francisco bochaton at universidad nacional del litoral. an open air show, good attendance, the show picked up after about 30 minutes...I'm happy I brought my big muff...the bridge of my jaguar needed constant adjustment...buzzing...too many extreme temperatute changes. "el gusano" was hot. my solo on perfume parpadear was difficult...

dinner at the university and back to hotel

I'm surprised to see how many people regularly watch "la national film chamber orchestra" on filmoteca, canal 7tv

rip mr salvador samaritano. sent my condolences to his family

this tour goes on: we play in rosario tomorrow

new dates with flopa in the calendar

a date with la congreso wolrd templation in the calendar!

devil's bug...

the bus to mendoza was fancy, but at our arrival we had to wait a long time out in the cold for "the guy who has the key" of the place we were staying...

I got a terrible cold...after lunch I stayed in bed...feeling feeble...until soundcheck...I was driven to soundcheck in a terrible state, and I was tortured by the soundman asking millions of hard hits of the snare drum...I liked the sound of my jaguar through a stack nativo amp...then back to the apartment for a shower and back to bed...nelson the band's bass player brought a plate of boiled rice to my bed...then I was driven to the venue (I bought a thermometer on our way)...away from the city...to long of a ride...ouch...feeling terrible

francisco bochaton at aloha...very nice venue...good sound system...unbearably loud support band...I played and I survived but I felt terrible...very bad...matias the band's keyboardist was also sick and wished to go back home asap, on an early plane...

back to bed around 5am

on saturday I felt even worst...all day in bed...took the fancy bus back to buenos aires...began to feel a bit better around midnight...back home at 9am played with my daughter and rested

today I played with la national film chamber orchestra at canal 7tv , we played the movie "maman colibri"...a bit of a hard job...back home for lunch and an afternoon off

thursday

moni and I went to see laurie anderson at teatro gran rex last week. excellent show, so fine, such a treat! a remarkable band... lou reed played and sang as guest.

memories of playing with charly at gran rex on his 55th birthday show, and of visiting the theater together with charly and pedro to meet bjork...in fact I was wearing my same velvet jacket ... and my "say no more" bracelet was in my pocket. I hope to be able to see charly again soon, I hope he is in good recovery

last friday matias and I played the music for metropolis... the very complete version, with fragments I´ve never seen before, and a long last section (a 45 minutes finale!!!)

on the weekend I composed and recorded the music for nadina´s short film. all with "reason" playing my electric through my gr1 into the reason sounds...orchestral!

on saturday I visited samalea and he suggested changes in the pieces´ order of my new live cd

monday: recordings for maxi´s new album at concreto, produced by alejandro teran...wonderful stuff...my jaguar had a buzz on the fifth strings so I had a hard time...I hope to have a new chence next week...I loved the songs!

more recordings with la national film chamber orchestra this week. "the last man", by murnau, is superb. but the added end was difficult to play...it felt so "off" from the movie...

today I´m at rolling stone magazine with my favorite 10 guitar songs:

television / venus
the pretenders / kid
bowie / fashion
king crimson / elephant talk
pescado rabioso / cementerio club
u2 / bad
the police / walking on the moon
charly garcia / cerca de la revolucion
led zeppelin / black dog
the beatles / taxman

the are aso many more I can think of...10 is not enough!!!!!!!

tonight I travel to mendoza to play with francisco bochaton

Monday, August 25, 2008

busy saturday:

in the afternoon I played a solo improvised show at direccion general de museos, in the basement auditorium, very cozy place, very nice and warm sound. I enjoyed playing. unfortunately I could not check out the other performances since i had to leave to la plata inmediately

drive to la plata

in the evening i played with francisco bochaton at el teatro, in la plata. the biginning was terrible and this marked the whole performance, which could never recover: since the band that played before us extended their show (good show) a bit too long and began a little too late, and since our manager was under great pressure cause we had to en strictly on time, the change of sets was done in great rush...and the keyboards fell down on the stage...and broke! but we had to begin on time...so we began but in a strange mood, not able to respect the set list, the keyboard player no able to play his instrument (matias ended up playing on his microkorg and guitars...) and on top of this drinks asked by francisco and by the drummer never got to the stage... I only got a glass of warm pepsi (sorry...no ice available...

when relaxing in the dressing rooms area after the show (our proper dressing room had been emptied already...) we were asked to leave since alfredo casero and his band needed the space...ok...bye...I didn't feel at home in this venue.....

back home before 3:00am

fun

yesterday guitar lessons in the morning and afternoon

last night I played an improvised concert with santiago vazquez at espacio eclectico.

we had so much fun...and the venue became one of my favorite venues in buenos aires. such a nice place, with good sound, cozy and clean dressing room, delicious food and kind staff, located in san telmo. santiago and I had lots of gear. santi with his handsonic, a looping device, berinbao, talking drum and lots of percussive toys!
I run my jaguar through a roland gr20>whammy>boss loop station>boss giga delay>rat>mxr distortion>fuzz factory>pulstar tremolo> another boss giga delay > line 6 delay modeller> korg kaoss pad into a fender blues deluxe

lots of pedals, lots of fun

today after driving my daughter to kinder garden I recorded with la national film chamber orchestra at estudio 5 of canal 7 TV: 2 movies by duvuvier. "au bonheur des dames" was most enjoyable. we also played maman colibri.

a sunny day in buenos aires, time to go to the park with my daughter.

maestro penderecki

last week I visited teatro coliseo again to hear a chamber orchestra from vilnius (home of some kabusacki ancestors) conducted by maestro penderecki. superb. very moving. they played penderecki, shostakovich and dvorak.

thursday: I accompanied charly to the doctor and back home, and that was the last time I saw him before he got into troubles. I tried to fly to san juan but all the flights to san juan and mendoza were fully booked, with no waiting lists. we had arranged I was going to join the band for the show in rosario june 13. I looked forward to this show. I booked a car to drive me to rosario straight after my show with flopa. that meant from the road to the stage, but manageable. it all fell down. sadly. I hope charly will recover soon. I visited him at the hospital yesterday but I wasn't let in. "strict orders: no one is allowed to see him" said a policeman. very very sad. I left a message for him but I doubt it got to his hands at all. I was informed by nachosnm there was going to be a peaceful gathering at his house's door, expressing support.

last night flopa presented her new album at centro cultural rojas. I used my new pedalboard designed and prepared by cluster. very comfortable! in it there's a boss tuner > boss compressor > rat > fuzz factory > mxr distortion > cluster tremolo > line 6 delay modeller. all to a fender blues deluxe. I used my blue fender jaguar. a sold out show. flopa and this band are so wonderful, and the songs so beautiful...more luxury: guest guitarists rodrigo guerra, manza, claudio lafalce and ariel minimal! a claim from flopa: "free charly garcia"

pizza at guerrin with flopa and band after the show

listening to 00I00 in the car. reading andy summers' "one train later". watched robert wyatt's bbc documentary.

getting cold in buenos aires

very cold days in buenos aires, my old leather jacket is on.

rehearsals with flopa's band continue, with new versions of old songs and new versions of new songs. the band's lineup is always moving: rodrigo guerra is playing guitars on some songs and juan plays keyboards and percussion instead of gtr. on the last rehearsal I missed juan's guitar.

weekly rehearsals continue, and 2 shows with francisco bochaton. one in san miguel 2 weeks ago (one of the best for this lineup) and last friday in ciudad vieja, la plata. things change so much for me when there is another electric guitarist in the band...and I can't complain at all...in charly's band there's kiuge...in francisco's band there francisco playing a strat and in flopa's band there is juan or rodrigo (flopa plays acoustic). luxury.

the combination of my washburn red rocker (w/ seymour duncan) and the blues deluxe works well, particularly with the sd bridge pickup

on the van back to buenos aires last saturday morning we listened to a recording from our previous show at ciudad vieja. all of us were surprised. I think there's a live ep there...at least...

on friday eve I went see maestro daniel baremboin directing bruckner at teatro coliseo. superb.

brahms

listening to brahms now. these days on my car I have been listening to eric clapton/jj cale, elvis, cat power and kenny burrell, apart from the radio, fully overloaded with the subject of the absurd farmers' strike

a few weeks ago I played with bochaton in villa maria, and I used this amp. one of the worst experiences I had on a gig. appaling...never use this for an electric guitar!!!! the promoters or the venue's owner thought it's the same a guitar amp and a bass amp. well, it's not. had it been a fender bassman, maybe!!!!!!!

on the other side, when playing with charly in mar del plata I used this amp

and it was heaven!!!!

a busy week,

guitar lessons on tuesday, followed by a wonderful recording session with charly...a new song, stunning!

wednesday: a talk at national cinema school (enerc) re. my experience with music for films and silent movies, 2 hs queue in the bank, a visit by the mandel family (so glad to see them well!!!) and a rehearsal with flopa's band...also...new songs!!!

not much rest these days. I must look tired: a man at a coffee kiosk at coghlan station suggested I was in a riot or a fist fight...well, I wasn't... why???

thursday: guitar lessons in the morning and afternoon and 2 shows with la national film chamber orchestra at malba in the evening

today I hope to decompress and rest a bit...only 1 show at malba tonight

Monday, May 12, 2008

my jaguar has been readjusted by mr de castro...a superb job...now it rocks! I still haven't tried the midi pickup work yet though, but it looks good

charly also has a new guitar now! I begged him to take care of it...... we hope to get to play together and record soon

I recorded some guitars for samalea's new album last week

rehearsals with flopa begin this week...yes!

francisco bochaton at nd ateneo

may 2, 2008

francisco bochaton at nd ateneo

the band: francisco (electric and acoustic gtrs), matias mango (keys), quique ilid (drums), nelson colinwood (bass) and myself (electric gtr)

no matter how much we rehearse with francisco... there are so many songs in his repertoire always readily available to be called at the gigs (some times asked for by members of the audience) that there is always a great deal of surprise, freshness, inventive on the spot...the versions are always different, I like this! we played a brand new song today: gira la serpiente. a hit

nd ateneo is such a treat...the sound is superb...by far this is my favorite venue in this country. I played in this venue with robert fripp & the league of crafty guitarists, with juana molina, with flopa, with maria eva albistur, with samalea, with roxana amed...all different styles of music, and it always sound superb...

my setup this time: fender jaguar > fender blues deluxe amp > mxr distortion > rat > boss volume pedal > line 6 delay modeller > boss dd20 giga delay

back home around 3am, by the time the band was getting ready to party

what have I been listening to in my car recently? the travelling wilburys, haco, miles davis, skay, bill monroe, mark knopfler/emmylou harris and classical fm

today after buying 4 fish for the pond, I dropped my wife and daughter at granny's house and drove to alto palermo. I bought a cream dvd and an elvis cd and visited charly. we listened to new recordings and improvements on previous ones. great stuff! we ate a delicious chocolate cake

smokey week

smoke coming from the burning of country fields has been unbearable in buenos aires city. state of emergency has been declared and highways have been closed to traffic. red eyes, coughing, sore throats, high amounts of CO2 in the air, lack of visibility, smokey clothes, houses, cars...all caused by unscrupulous farm owners, unprevented by goverment

on tuesday and thursday i played at malba, as part of the bafici festival, accompanying "en el infierno del chaco", a stunning movie made around 1930 on the war between paraguay and bolivia. on tuesday I played with juan ravioli, on thursday alone

on wednesday I played at canal 7, alone since matias was sick, 2 movies by von stroheim. the first was too long for my capacities and preferences, the second brillant...a very exciting movie to play with. on this one I feel I contributed quite honorably.

on friday half of francisco bochaton's band was supposed to travel to villa maria...the roads were closed due to the smoke, so the buses were cancelled. things went back to almost normal at 14:15hs so I managed to ride on a bus...but the drummer couldn't make it...and matias continued to be sick...

on the bus I listened to miles' "big fun" and the rolling stones and read "parallels and paradoxes", coversations by daniel baremboin and edward said. I arrived at villa maria after a long ride around midnight; we played (drummerless and keyboardless) around 1:30am. a difficult gig...with hot moments. the bass amp (instead of guitar amp specified in the rider) assigned for me made it quite painful and hard

I slept 4 hours and got ready for our next ride to cordoba. slept a bit on the bus. listened to the mark knopfler/emmylou harris cd.

the gig in cordoba (at dorian gray discotheque) was very good although with accidents: the tension went down 3 times and the gig almost got cancelled. finally a generator was brought and the gig happened. the audience was very patient and enthusiastic, and the band delivered. my amp sounded great: a tronlite head with a decastro cabinet. superb. courtesy of a kind local guitarist named santos. overall the sound was very good.

2 hours sleep and ready for a 11 hours bus ride back to buenos aires

smoke cleared although strong smokey smell persists. listening at "anthology of american folk music" while typing in my garden

lucia cedron's new film is showing next month, with very good reviews...congratulations lucia!

it's been a very busy week,

on tuesday evening I visited charly at the studio, where he was recording. details and more details. a proposal for a series of shows with the prostitution... on thursday morning I read in the news that he spend a few hours in jail after troubles with 2 colombian guys. here's a photo from hotel hermitage's sidewalk. charly's hands are stamped next to carmen barbieri's

this morning more recordings with the film orchestra at canal 7. 2 argentinean films from ca 1915. we had sessions booked for the emergency thing this afternoon and tomorrow but yhey got cancelled.

flopa at nd ateneo

thursday: guitar lessons in the day. in the evening I played with flopa (sharing the bill with hana and rosario blefari) at nd ateneo, always a pleasure to play in the wonderful theater. superb sound, great vibe. audience very warm and kind. flopa overcame her flu and delivered,

bob dylan's never ending tour

since last posting I played with el diablo en la boca, several shows at malba and recordings at canal 7 with la national film chamber orchestra, rehearsed with flopa and with bochaton, celebrated my 43rd birthday and went to see dylan at estadio velez and, last night, at hipodromo de rosario. back on the night bus with sama...very tired
dylan's shows were such a master class. so enjoyable and so nourishing...I'm very happy i went to both shows; i even bought a tshirt. at the show in velez I had the conviction that my life was changing
I have used my new amp today at the rehearsal with flopa...a fender blues deluxe...sounds wonderful...
